It's not SAVE OR DIE

It's you are dead.  Would you like roll a save to see if the gods grant you a second chance?

  1. This is the right way to view Saving Throws; I think the reason people balk at them is because, unless information is made available, they can crop up unexpectedly. Turning the wrong corner and being turned to stone by a randomly-rolled wandering Medusa is a lot different (and a lot less fair) than hunting a Medusa and not having the good sense to look away.

Yes & Maybe. First (and I think I have to make post on this) wandering monsters should rarely be poof monster appears around corner.

The "Maybe" part is if you're on the 9th level of the hell pits you probably should be prepared for unannounced death around every corner. At that level and risk I'd expect parties to be extremely cautious, using magic to scout, etc.

  3. You definitely need to use every means at your disposal to prepare and scout if you are attempting something you know to be especially dangerous. And anytime you're in a dungeon or unknown wilderness it is at least dangerous enough to be on your guard at all times. I'm afraid some players just waltz through the game blindly and expecting to fight and kill whatever they meet, then get upset when something gets them first.

  4. You're right, technically, but I must add it is bad game design that makes it feel like "save or die."
